Introduction to Uttarakhand — The Land of Gods

Uttarakhand, fondly called 'Devbhoomi' or the Land of the Gods, is a majestic Himalayan state in northern India. Carved out of Uttar Pradesh on November 9, 2000, it became India's 27th state. Covering approximately 53,483 square kilometres, it is bordered by Nepal to the east, China (Tibet) to the north, and Uttar Pradesh to the south. The state is divided into two divisions — Garhwal in the west and Kumaon in the east — each with its own rich traditions. Dehradun is the state capital while Nainital hosts the High Court. Uttarakhand is the sacred birthplace of the Ganga and Yamuna rivers, the source of the Char Dham pilgrimage circuit, and a globally renowned centre for yoga, meditation, and Ayurveda.
